Each year, the Anne Arundel Youth Soccer Association (AAYSA) awards scholarships to graduating high school student-athletes planning to continue their education through an undergraduate degree program or certification from an accredited college, university or technology school. This spring, AAYSA awarded $2,000 scholarships to seven Green Hornets soccer players: Gray Gardner, Ava McPhee, Colin King, Tanner Strom, Emma Ritter, Dash Havens and Logan Jones.
Gray will attend Anne Arundel Community College. His favorite soccer memory was scoring both goals against Chesapeake High School to win the county championship.
Ava will attend Binghamton University and major in psychology and will eventually head to medical school to become a psychiatrist. Her favorite soccer memory was winning the Green Hornets championship on penalty kicks as an eighth-grader.
Colin will attend the University of Maryland and major in operations management and business statistics. His favorite soccer memory is meeting lifelong friends he has made while playing the sport.
Tanner will travel to Tucuman, Argentina, for a mission trip before attending Brigham Young University. He will always remember this past soccer season not because of the poor record but because he still had a lot of fun and learned that life isn’t always about winning.
Emma will attend Emory University and will double major in East Asian studies and neuroscience. She will always remember winning the county championship as a sophomore, and soccer taught her to be resilient and hardworking.
Dash will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and major in physics and minor in finance. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and credits 15 years of soccer with teaching him practice, consistency and persistence.
Logan will attend the University of Miami and major in finance. He will remember scoring a “banger goal” in his final game.
