Severn River Middle School in Arnold has been named a 2026-2027 Maryland Blue Ribbon School for its academic performance and progress in closing achievement gaps among student groups.

The Maryland State Department of Education announced the honor on October 20. Severn River is one of 12 Maryland public schools to receive the distinction, which reflects performance on state and national assessments.

“Our entire team and school community are immensely honored to be recognized in this way,” Principal Mike McCann said. “This accomplishment happens because students, staff and families both past and present have been committed to making sure our school’s environment is one that fully supports every student so that they can Belong, Grow and Succeed.”

Since 2022, Severn River’s overall English language arts proficiency has increased by 17.8 percentage points. Gains included 32.7 points among Black-African American students and 25.6 points among students receiving free and reduced-price meals.

Overall math proficiency rose 12.6 percentage points during the same period, including a 14.7-point increase among students receiving free and reduced-price meals. Scores on the Algebra I exam averaged 87 percent over the past three years.

The school also recorded a 17.2 percentage point increase in English language learners making progress toward English language proficiency.

Alongside those academic gains, Severn River’s chronic absenteeism rate declined by 5.3 percentage points since 2022.

“Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools demonstrate what is possible when strong leadership, dedicated educators and engaged families work together on behalf of students,” said Carey Wright, Maryland state superintendent of schools.

A total of 23 public and private schools earned Maryland Blue Ribbon recognition for 2026-2027. The Maryland State Board of Education will honor the schools in December.
