This Memorial Day weekend, the Severna Park Green Hornets 10U travel baseball team went 4-1 and took second place out of 19 teams at the 8th Annual Walk the Plank Memorial Day Baseball Classic in Olney.

In five games the Green Hornets outscored the opposition 71-19 and posted wins over the Linganore-Oakdale-Urbana Thunder Minors, Bowie Bulldogs, Bowie Elite and Upper Montgomery before falling to the South Central PA Landsharks in the tournament final.

While head coach Steve Shuart was proud of the boys’ performance in Olney, he praised the dedication the team has shown since they convened for winter workouts.

“We started this winter by asking the team to listen, work hard, hustle and be aggressive,” said Shuart. “The team has executed on everything we asked, which has turned into great baseball, winning games and, most of all, having lots of fun as a team.”

In addition to the Green Hornets’ output on the field, the players have also taken it upon themselves to volunteer in the community by participating in the Back Pack Buddies Program, in which the boys packed backpacks full of food to be distributed to needy families in the area throughout the school year.

The 10U Green Hornets travel baseball players are Colton Adams, Ty Cummings, Will Faulk, Tucker McDonough, Dane Shuart, Dominic Stokes, Zach Tettemer, Clay Weaver, Jake Whitlock, Michael Wiley and Tyler Yeatman. They are coached by Steve Shuart, Wes Adams, Jeff Cummings, Carl Johnson, Brian McDonough, Dave Stokes and Albert Whitlock.

At 8-4 in league play, the Green Hornets (14-10 overall) are currently in fifth place out of 16 teams in the Chesapeake Baseball Association.
