Devlan Collier wanted to leave a mark on Severn School, and he was able to do that in more ways than one.
A two-sport starter for the Admirals, Collier also featured in multiple clubs, moonlights as a guitarist in part from his time at Severn, and graduated from the school with honors.
All of that has combined to keep him on the path he wants most.
Collier stood out as a captain on Severn’s boys lacrosse team, which made the MIAA A Conference playoffs and picked up 11 wins, including a series of impressive victories over Boys Latin, St. Paul’s, Severna Park, and Gilman.
“We had a bunch of like-minded guys as captains, and when we saw the guys around us and what it could be with this group of guys who were leading,” Collier said. “I feel like more than anything, even the guys on the bench who rarely get into the game, with those guys the culture we brought to the team, they were showing up every day, were 100% bought in to everything. I think that was special about this group.
“We had a whiteboard in the locker room with ‘Little Admirals’ on it; before we played all the big schools with hundreds of guys in the school, we’d always say they think they’re playing the Little Admirals with about 200 guys, and only 35 guys on the team. We let them think that, and we leaned into it instead of looking at it as a disadvantage.”
Collier graduated with honors from Severn, where he played lacrosse and football. He also participated in math and investment clubs, in addition to Jam Band.
That’s a space in the music department where students can jam out together and form both friendships and musical skills. He used that to hone his guitar skills, and plays in a group called After August alongside some classmates. They play gigs in the summer both locally and in Ocean City.
When he’s not doing that, he’s on the water or in the gym.
“Growing up on the water, I’m on the boat, or surfing, boogieboarding, anything with the water. That and physical fitness are really important to me,” Collier said.
Collier is signed to continue his lacrosse career at Marist University in Poughkeepsie, New York, which ironically is where current Severn boys lacrosse coach Keegan Wilkinson was coaching before taking over with the Admirals.
“I hadn’t committed to a school my junior year, and during the summer I was talking to a few different schools. I played in a tournament for Severn and Marist was there, and they started talking to me after that,” Collier said. “I went up last summer and thought it was one of the coolest places I’d ever seen. (Wilkinson) didn’t say a single word about it to me through the whole process, but when I told him I thought (Marist) was the place, he was pretty fired up.”
Collier will participate in the honors college at Marist and plans to study finance.
