Title Return Is The Goal For Broadneck Boys Lacrosse

Posted

For three straight seasons, Broadneck’s boys lacrosse team has made the 4A state championship. The last two, they’ve come up achingly short of adding to the title they won in 2023.

With depth of talent coming back, they’re aiming for a fourth straight trip to the final, and they hope, a bookend championship.

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Bruins have faced a challenging slate and come through with a 3-2 record. Their losses came in a season-opening 13-5 defeat against regional power Springfield (Pennsylvania), and a 6-5 decision against James W. Robinson (Virginia) in a cross-border battle over spring break. The wins came over South River (17-3), Marriotts Ridge (16-6) and West Potomac (15-2) in the second half of the Maryland-Virginia crossover.

The Bruins have talent in spades: they return leading scorers Wyatt Hicks and Brady Cornett, both sophomores, as well as a pair of Division I-bound seniors in the midfield in Wyatt Shaw (Harvard) and Carson Pierce (Mercer). There’s also junior defender Grayson Boone, committed to Michigan, and senior Archbishop Spalding transfer Luke Doyle helping in the rearguard.

Randolph Macon signees Keaton Walker (faceoff specialist) and Aiden Gillette (midfielder), and Salisbury commit junior midfielder Jack Deitch are among the depth pieces that will help Broadneck succeed in defense and transition, two areas of strength highlighted by head coach Jeff McGuire.

Broadneck’s testing schedule continues with games at Stephen Decatur on April 7 and Severna Park a week later, followed up by a home matchup with Cape Henlopen (Delaware) on April 22.
