Starting in May 2023, some individuals on Medicaid may no longer be able to continue receiving benefits.
When the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, Marylanders who were eligible for Medicaid continued to be covered, even if they were no longer eligible.
Medicaid renewals will not be automatic this year. Starting this month, Maryland will begin making eligibility reviews again. Not everyone will be up for renewal at the same time. Renewals will take place over 12 months.
If you are no longer eligible or need to renew coverage, you will receive a notice in your Maryland Health Connection account or the mail when it’s time to renew.
It is important to make sure your contact information is up to date to receive and respond to important messages about your health insurance.
What you need to do now:
Update contact information
Contact the Medical Assistance Eligibility and Enrollment Program to update your current mailing address, phone number, email or other contact information.

Watch for communications from Maryland Health Connection
Not everyone will be up for renewal at the same time. You will receive a notice in the mail or in your online account (if you chose paperless) when it’s time to renew. When you get your notice, you will have 45 days to respond.
Renew coverage or enroll in a private plan when you receive a notice
Read your notice carefully. This notice will tell you to complete your renewal or let you know if you are no longer eligible for Medicaid coverage.
If you are no longer eligible, low-cost health insurance options, such as private plans from CareFirst, Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare are available.
You can enroll by calling Health Care Access Maryland at 410-500-4710 or through Maryland Health Connection within 60 days of losing your health coverage.
