Winter Lecture- Ospreys on the Patuxent: Their Important Role in this Ecosystem

Explore osprey biology on the Patuxent River, diet behavior and threats to population. The provision of nesting platforms, re-introduction of the osprey, and the efforts to increase their numbers and increase public awareness with educational banding program.

Greg Kearns is a Senior Park Naturalist for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (MNCPPC) at the Patuxent River Park in Prince George’s County, Md. He has worked for MNCPPC on the Patuxent River for over 35 years and is an expert on wetland ecology of the Chesapeake Bay, an expert birder, and a renowned authority on Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and the Sora rail (Porzana carolina).​ During Greg’s career at Patuxent River Park he has spearheaded an osprey nest platform and banding program that spans a good portion of the tidal Patuxent River and 38 years. Greg not only does the technical monitoring work but makes it accessible to the public through very unique educational opportunities.
