Greens Hornets 10U Team Wins Battle Of The Bay Baseball Tournament

Posted

With the score knotted 1-1 in The Ripken Experience’s Battle of the Bay baseball tournament in late June, Connor Mellinger scored from third base on a wild pitch and Nico Durastanti laced a one-out single down the right-field line, allowing Charlie Gursel to score. Those runs gave the 10U Green Hornets a 3-1 lead and a tournament win over Brad Mar Pine Athletics.

During the single-elimination tournament in Aberdeen, Maryland, the Green Hornets went 6-1. Pitchers Liam Walklett and Connor Mellinger threw complete games in the tournament finals and semifinals, respectively. Walklett was named tournament MVP.

Offensively, Walklett, Chris Doot and Glenn Mutchler all batted over .500 during the tournament.

Not only did the team show resilience in the final match but also in their second-round game against the Medford Renegades. Going into the final inning, the score was tied 7-7 until Mac Rainey hit a two-run double, scoring Durastanti and scoring himself on an error.

The Greens Hornets finished the season with a 28-14 record.
