Christina Young has painted hundreds of subjects, but now she can boast she knows a thing or ewe about sheep.

Young entered the fine arts competition two-artwork maximum at the 50th annual Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, held May 6 and 7 at Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, and each piece stood out from the herd.

Young earned second place for her “Mother’s Love” acrylic painting featuring Kinder Farm Park resident Teddy and her baby, Frankie. Young earned first place for “Momma Dinky,” also an acrylic painting, featuring Dinky, who also calls the Kinder Farm barn her home. “Momma Dinky” also brought home the reserved blue ribbon.

The mission of the festival is to promote all things sheep, including wool, fiber spinning and textile production, sheep showmanship, fine arts celebrating sheep and shearing. More than a dozen competition categories are scheduled over two days, along with numerous seminars, demonstrations and family activities.

“Momma Dinky” is for sale and “Mother’s Love” has been sold, however, prints can be ordered by contacting the artist at christinayoung2323@yahoo.com. To learn more about the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, visit www.sheepandwool.org.
