Archbishop Spalding hadn’t allowed a touchdown since August. When rival McDonogh quickly maneuvered down the field and scored a touchdown early in the first quarter of the MIAA A Conference championship on Friday, it stunned the Cavaliers.

Spalding’s senior leaders and coaches began to communicate to stick to the principles of Spalding football and to refocus their efforts and be the more physical team.

The Cavaliers used offense, defense and special teams to reel off 31 unanswered points to become the first football team in Spading’s history to go undefeated and win their third consecutive conference title.

“This is the best football team in Spalding’s history and probably the best team in the MIAA’s (Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association) history and maybe the state,” said Spalding’s head football coach Kyle Schmitt. “I have the best job in the world coaching these guys, and I’m thankful for my coaches and players who have worked so hard for this accomplishment.”

Spalding finished the season at 12-0 and outscored their opponents 487-34 this season, including beating powerhouse DeMatha in August.

According to national high school athletic website MaxPreps, Spalding is currently ranked the 11th best team in the nation. The Cavaliers also have six players who have committed to Division I football programs, including three to Maryland, two to Navy and one to Northwestern.
